I Was In Four Places At Once

We went to church at St. Rita's in Mancos this morning. We were the only visitors and were presented with a picture of St. Rita with a prayer for a safe journey on the back. When an elderly gentleman walked past us on his way to Communion he told Ted they have "goodies and coffee" in the hall afterwards and we should join them. At the end of Mass the lady at the end of the pew told me the same thing, so we went.

Eugene and Loretta (the elderly couple) are in their 80s and their 25 acres in the mountains outside of town is their 30th home. They are moving into town to be closer to their sons because they know they need some help now. They were an interesting couple and we talked for about 45 minutes. It was such a welcoming experience.

We came home for breakfast, a long phone converation with Kristin, a shorter one with Eileen to discuss the mail and then we left for the Four Corners Monument which is about 40 miles away. The area to the SW of here is all beige with a smattering of dull green here and there. What struck me was the rock formations coming out of what looked to be sandpiles. It is nothing like the area where we are camping.

Four Corners isn't much except the monument. It is the only place in the US where four states meet. There is a large bronze circle disected into four quarters showing Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico state lines. The US flag, the state flags and the Navajo Nation and Ute Indian flags were all flown around the monument. Everyone was having their picture taken and didn't seem to know the best place to stand. I knelt down and put my knees in Colorado and Utah and my hands in New Mexico and Arizona!

There are rows of booths selling mostly Indian jewelry and a couple places selling Indian Fry Bread and drinks. Ted tried the bread and we decided it was a cross between a Mexican sopapilla and a carnival funnel cake. I took a bite but it was too greasy for me. I did buy a turquoise bracelet to go with the other turquoise jewelry I have.

We then drove back towards the campground and stopped at the Ute Indian Casino. Ted played video poker and I played the slots. We stayed a couple of hours and I won $22 and he lost $20. Last time I lost and he won so we seem to be taking turns winning and that keeps us in the black.

We are moving tomorrow to Pagosa Springs and I don't think I'll have wifi so it may be Wednesday or Thursday until I post again. Give your eyes a rest.
