The Past Week in Review

We met Melissa and Gus for dinner on Monday evening. They wanted to see our new RV so they followed us back to the campground. They have sons in Denver, Austin and Charlotte and are trying to figure out how to visit them all without staying with them for extended periods or paying expensive hotel bills. I'm not sure Gus was sold after seeing the size of ours. I guess it is intimidating for those who have never pulled a trailer before.

Tuesday I had my hair cut and colored and then we met all the kids at Famous Dave's to have dinner. We always take them all out to eat and had not gotten around to doing it yet this trip. We took Morgan home with us for the evening. We put together a 100 piece jigsaw puzzle, played LCR and dominoes. We also played Hop the Pot, a game she invented. She drew a board and made up the rules. The only consistent one was that she was to be the winner!!

Ted washed the truck Wednesday morning and she helped. Then he took her to the playground. We went to Hollywood Market, took the groceries back to the rig and then went on to Wal-Mart where Kara met us in the parking lot to pick her up. Allen needed to borrow my computer so I gave it to her and told her to bring it to Alpena on Friday.

We pulled out at 8 am on Thursday morning and people were lined up to get in. This goofy guy who works in the guard house stopped us and asked if we were leaving. Ted told him no he was taking the trailer for a drive and handed him our post tag. This was the guy who took our parking pass and walked to the back of the truck to check the license against the tag when we came in once after midnight. He then proceeded to tell us all about his heart surgery. A couple years ago he threatened to give us a ticket for leaving an outside light on because we had once again come in late! It takes all kinds.

We had an uneventful four hour trip to Hillman and got settled in at the Thunder Bay RV Resort a few spots down from our friends Linda and Howard. Later on in the afternoon they invited us down for drinks. It was good catching up with them in person rather than through our blogs.

Both kids and their families arrived on Friday. Kara was at the Best Western in Alpena. We took a ride to Starlight Park to check out the facilities and beach so we could plan the next day.

Pat chose a campground out of the Trailer Life book and it was a big mistake. I would have never paid and would have moved on but unfortunately he did. Every rig was "cheek to jowl" and there was ONE shower stall and four commodes for the entire campground. Not a good scenario with so many in tents and pop-ups with no personal facilities.

We met at Starlight Park today and the kids swam and we had a picnic. Ted grilled chicken, burgers and hot dogs. We all decided to go to church at 6 pm. The 10 of us took up an entire row from the center aisle to the side aisle. They sang America the Beautiful as the recessional song and it always chokes me up. Pat had decided to get a motel room for Kelly and the two girls while he went back to the campground. He didn't want to leave the camper unattended even though he knew it was going to be a noisy night. I'm not sure what they'll do tomorrow night. Maybe after a good night's sleep and a shower they can muddle through another night in that crowded campground.

We came back to our campground and joined the group in the pavilion. Ted has made arrangements to go shooting with two fellows who happen to be twins. They are from the Ann Arbor area. Then we are going back to Alpena to spend one last day with the kids. We'll miss the RV-Dreams.com potluck but we'll survive.

Tonight we went to the fairway of the 6th hole of the golf course and watched the Hillman fireworks. It was very impressive for this tiny town. The mosquitoes were awful though and we had to keep smacking at them.

I hope everyone is enjoying their 4th of July holiday weekend.
