We received the dreaded call around 4:30 on Sunday. My sister’s husband had passed away. We are all devastated and the additional heartache is for Karen who has Alzheimer’s and he was her caregiver. They had just been moved to an assisted living facility in Batesville, IN to be close to several of their children but he was immediately put in hospice care. He died within 6 days. He was a wonderful husband and father plus friend and neighbor. He taught the young men in his family how to do so many things and they all use these talents today to create beautiful homes and trappings. He was an avid fisherman so I hope he has a big lake up in heaven to fish all he wants.
We had to do some juggling to clear our calendar so we could start out Tuesday morning for our two day drive. With all the flights being canceled and rental cars so hard to come by, we chose to just drive and we are staying with Ted’s brother Dan. My brother Kim has all the building lots left on Dan’s street and there is a porta potty in the work area. Good thing, because Dan was not home from golfing and Ted needed to use the facility. He came out and told me to tell Kim thanks!
It was a long haul, with an awful stay at an OYO motel, but we arrived safe and sound. The three of us went out for Mexican in an area being gentrified by developers, one of whom is my brother. On Thursday we went to lunch with a brother apiece and spent a long time talking about the old neighborhood, schools and sports. That evening we spent time with my family preparing a church hall for a post burial reception.
